1309 Work Stalls Again For Lack of Funds

August 25th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Train Magazine reported in its Newswire Saturday that work has stopped on Steam Engine 1309, once again due to a lack of funding.

According to the report, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is primarily in need of about $40,000 to purchase a driving box for the rear engine, more money to finish the installation of the boiler, and then another $80,000 for a coal storage and ash removal system required by West Virginia environmental regulations.

All told, the remaining price tag will exceed $200,000. The renovation of 1309 has been beset with problems from the start, with the total project cost approaching $3 million.

After completion, 1309 will need two to three months of testing prior to being put into service.
