A Lonaconing man suffered minor injuries early Wednesday when his rig traveled out of control and down an embankment along U.S. Route 50 near Burlington.

The Cumberland Times News reports Sheriff Jeremy Taylor said Gary W. McKenzie, 51, was treated at Potomac Valley Hospital following the 12:23 a.m. crash that apparently occurred when a deer jumped in front of the rig that was carrying a 45,000-lb. load.  After travelling down the embarkment, the rig struck a 10-inch round tree, causing the a bale of stainless steel to become dislodged and travel through the back of the cab.

The cab of the rig was crushed by the dislodged bale of stainless steel in the accident that occurred in the area of “three lanes,” police said.

Burlington volunteer fire and ambulance personnel and sheriff’s office personnel were on the scene for seven hours along with Department of Highways personnel.

No charges were filed, police said.
