$2.6 Million in Heritage Area Grants Will Affect Allegany and Garrett Counties

September 9th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

While much of the focus the past year at Canal Place has been the effort to restore the Footer DyeWorks building for commercial development opportunities- a $2.6 million package of state grants designated for heritage areas will also provide a major shot in the arm. The grant was announced earlier this summer and will aid local projects and organizations, including Canal Place, the Savage River State Forest and the rehabilitation of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s recently acquired steam engine. The grants from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority are distributed statewide, more than  $266,000 is earmarked for Allegany and Garrett county projects.  A $100,000 grant is designated for Canal Place.  Canal Place Preservation & Development Authority Executive Director Dee Dee Ritchie says heritage tourism is going to play a major role for the region’s economic development industry.
