2013 Operating Budget Tops BOE Agenda

The proposed FY 2013 operating budget topped the agenda of the Allegany County Board of Education meeting Tuesday night. Superintendent David Cox’s proposed budget does not call for major program cuts, instead relying on digging deeply into the school system’s reserve- or rainy day fund. It also requests additional funding from county government. To offset anticipated state funding cuts, Cox recommended the board spend around $5 million of its approximately $10 million fund balance — more than twice as much as this year — leaving $5 million in what is essentially a savings account. That would give the school system a fiscal 2013 budget of $109,424,265 — just $142,906 less than this fiscal year. Over the past four years, state funding to Allegany County Public Schools has declined by more than $10 million — and additional cuts are anticipated in the years ahead.
