School System Responds To WCBC South Penn Inquiry

May 7th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Public School System has responded to questions about issues that were brought up on our airwaves by listeners and other sources of the Dave Norman Program.

Public Information Officer Mia Cross responded to our question about changes in the administration at South Penn Elementary School:

Starting April 16, 2015, Heather Morgan, the Assistant Principal at South Penn, was assigned as temporary coverage as principal at Parkside Elementary.  Tessa Fairall, an Elementary Math Instructional Specialist, has been assigned to temporarily fill in for Mrs. Morgan (until she returns.)

We also inquired about the use of paper shedders in the system, and under what circumstances documents would be shredded, and received this response:

A paper shredder is part of the standard equipment in school offices.  In accordance with the Records Retention and Disposition Method produced by the Maryland State Department of Education, General Files are to be retained for three years and until all audit requirements are met and then destroyed.  The state records retention and disposition manual is specific as to which files and how long each are to be retained and then destroyed.  Documents are typically shredded on a daily basis at schools, and only those documents considered “records” in the state manual would be accounted for.

A Freedom Of Information Act request, filed by WCBC, has not been filled, as the school system is demanding a payment fee of over $800 for retreval of the requested information.
