December 22nd, 2015 by WCBC Radio

On December 21, 2015 at approximately 11:15 A.M. deputies of the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to Oldtown Road (Rt.51) in the area of Town Creek Bridge in reference to a motor vehicle crash. Prior to this incident PawPaw Police in West Virginia had reported a vehicle pursuit that had reached speeds of approximately 120 MPH. The pursuit was cancelled as the vehicle entered Allegany County, Maryland. The vehicle that was chased was described as a black passenger vehicle possibly bearing West Virginia registration being driven by a black male suspect. While deputies were en route to the crash Allegany County Emergency Operation Center received a call from a witness who advised the black male operator of the crashed vehicle had exited the vehicle and threw something that appeared to be a weapon over a nearby embankment. The operator approached the witness and requested a ride into town at which time he refused. The operator of the crashed vehicle then fled the scene on foot. Upon arrival on the scene, deputies contacted several witnesses who described the operator as a tall, thin, black male wearing dark clothing and was bleeding from his hands. The witnesses last observed the operator walking on Rod and Gun Club Road, just west of the crash site. Additional deputies checked the area of Rod and Gun Club Road and eventually located a black male subject hiding under a travel camper, attempting to cover his face. The subject was ordered from the area and secured in hand restraints. EMS personnel responded to the scene and conducted a health assessment of the subject. Once the subject was examined it was determined he did not require further treatment. Deputies were able to identify the subject as Antonio Charles Preston by a Maryland identification card. Mr. Preston was transported back to the scene where witnesses were able to identify him as the operator of the crashed vehicle. While processing the crash scene, one of the witnesses notified deputies of an object located at the bottom of the embankment near the scene. The object was determined to be a black color pistol containing blood on the handle. A holster was also located along the embankment that also contained fresh blood on it. The pistol and holster were determined to be the object the witnesses had initially observed the operator of the crashed vehicle throw prior to him fleeing the scene. Deputies were able to determine Preston had been traveling west on Oldtown Road at a high rate of speed when he failed to properly negotiate a turn in the roadway. The vehicle crossed the center line, began to spin out of control, and overturned onto its top. The vehicle was described as a 2007 Pontiac four door passenger vehicle bearing West Virginia registration. It was later determined that Preston's driving privileges were currently suspended. Antonio Charles Preston was processed and charged with the following. Handgun on Person Handgun In Vehicle Driving Vehicle in Excess of Reasonable and Prudent Speed on Highway Failure to Control Vehicle Speed on Highway to Avoid Collision Violating License Restriction Driving Vehicle on Highway without Required License and Authorization Driving Motor Vehicle on Highway on Suspended License and Privilege Negligent Driving Reckless Driving Driver Failure to Obey Properly Placed Traffic Control Device Failure to Drive Right of Center Operating Motor Vehicle in Condition Likely to Cause Accident Failure to Return to and Remain at Scene of Accident Failure of Vehicle Driver Involved in Accident to Provide Insurance Information Preston was taken before an Allegany County District Court Commissioner for an initial hearing at which time he was committed to the Allegany County Detention Center on $20,000 bail.
