31st annual Coney Days activities begin June 24

June 23rd, 2017 by WCBC Radio

In 1987, Lonaconing celebrated its 150th anniversary as a chartered town. A committee was formed to plan the celebration, which included writing a book entitled “Home in the Hills,” historic window displays, parades and a pageant depicting the town’s history as a coal mining “boom town.” The Georges Creek Promotion Council was an outgrowth of the celebration. The council was formed with the mission of promoting and supporting the Lonaconing area. One of the council’s major projects has been Coney Days, which will be celebrated for the 31st time this year from June 24 to July 5. To kick off the festivities June 24, the Lonaconing Iron Furnace 5K Run will begin at 8 a.m.

The highlight of the weeklong Coney Days celebration is Sunday in the Park, which will be held June 25 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Iron Furnace Park on Main Street. The event features all-day live music from Garrett Highland Pipes and Drums and Surrender Dorothy, games, raffles, moon bounce, face painting, food stands, Art at the Park kids’ art contest, a performance from the Frostburg Dance Academy, local artists and craft booths, and local information displays.

Other activities include an ice cream social June 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Main Street; a meatloaf dinner June 27 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at First Methodist Church, Church Street, and the annuaal campfire at the Georges Crrek Regional Library on June 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The annual Georges Creek fireworks display will take place at the Westmar Middle School athletic field July 3 at 9:45 p.m. This event also provides rides for children, refreshments and entertainment beginning at 5 p.m. The rain date for the fireworks will be July 5.

On July 5, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Dan’s Mountain State Park pool will host Dollar Dip Day.

Through sponsorships from Egle Nursing and Rehab Center, Lonaconing Lions Club and fundraising efforts from the committee, a trolley will run between the town parking lots and the Allegany Arts Bus. Hank’s Snapshots and the Button Depot button-making booth will be offered for free.
