Maryland treasurer criticizes Trump’s DACA decision

September 6th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

Maryland Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp leveled a blistering critique of President Donald J. Trump Wednesday in response to the president’s decision to end protections for people brought into the country illegally as children. Kopp, a Democrat, called the decision “just un-American” and “wrong.”  “The so-called leaders in Washington are bringing out the worst in us,” Kopp said during her opening remarks at the Board of Public Works meeting in Annapolis. Trump gave Congress a six-month deadline to address the program, called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

With Republican Gov. Larry Hogan sitting beside her, Kopp said it is important that the state and its governor speak out against the action.

Hogan, who had not mentioned the topic in his opening remarks, interjected that “I did that very firmly yesterday.”

On Tuesday, Hogan said through a spokeswoman that while he favors more secure borders, he supports participants in the DACA program
