68 East closed briefly for accident

On Monday, December 03, 2012 at approximately 9:50 a.m., officers from the Cumberland City Police Department responded to eastbound I-68 on the cross town bridge just prior to the exit for Maryland Avenue in reference to a motor vehicle crash which involved three vehicles. Upon the officer’s arrival, the Interstate had to be shut down due to the roadway being blocked by the vehicles involved in the crash.

Investigation revealed that a 1996 Chevrolet passenger car which was being operated by Wilbert Williams, Frostburg, MD was traveling the wrong direction. Williams was traveling west bound in the east bound lane. Due to Williams traveling the wrong direction he struck a second vehicle head on. This second vehicle was a 2012 Ford being operated by Brooke Larkin, LaVale, MD. After the initial crash Larkin’s vehicle veered right and struck a tractor trailer which was being operated by Nicholas Datri, Cresaptown, MD.

Cumberland Fire Department was on the scene and checked all operators, all of which did not require any medical treatment at the scene.

Williams’ and Larkin’s vehicles both were towed from the scene due to the damage resulting from the crash.

Williams was found to at fault for the crash, no citations were issued. The interstate was closed for approximately half an hour.
