August 23rd, 2011 by WCBC Radio

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington, D.C., and most of Maryland- including Cumberland. The shake was felt as far north as Rhode Island, New York City and Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. The downtown mall was flooded with people who had vacated their workplace after feeling tremors. Allegany County Emergency Management reported no initial damage locally, with the only real problem being a loss of cell phone service.
