May 28th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

On Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 11:31 a.m., the Frostburg City Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of East Main Street and Grant Street, Frostburg, with injuries reported. Upon arrival, police found that a Frostburg Area Ambulance Service ambulance and a 2010 Chevrolet truck had crashed into one another at the intersection. Upon investigating at the scene, police learned that the ambulance, operated by Christopher K. Durst, 25, of Meyersdale, had been traveling eastbound on East Main Street and had been approaching a steady red traffic signal. The ambulance was responding to an emergency call at the time, and had the emergency lights and sirens activated. At the same time, a 2010 Chevrolet pickup truck, operated by Justin M. Thomas, 26, of Westernport, was traveling into the same intersection, northbound on Grant Street onto eastbound East Main Street. As the vehicles entered the intersection, the truck had the right-of-way, and the operator of the ambulance did not see the truck prior to entering the intersection through the steady red signal. The ambulance struck the truck on the driver’s side. Both the ambulance and the truck were disabled and towed from the scene. The operator of the ambulance, one ambulance crew member, and the operator of the truck were transported to the hospital. The operator of the ambulance, Durst, was determined to be at fault. This matter remains under investigation, and a determination as to any traffic charges will be made upon conclusion.
