Accident Monday on I68

On Monday, June 3, 2013 Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to Eastbound Interstate 68 near Route 220 for a Motor Vehicle Accident. Upon the Officer’s arrival it was determined that five vehicles were involved. During the investigation it was learned that the driver of a 2005 Volvo attempted to merge into the left lane due to construction. The driver overcompensated and struck the Jersey Wall/Barrier. This impact caused the Volvo to spin around and come to rest across both lanes of traffic, which subsequently caused a chain reaction type accident.

An Allegany Ambulance traveling behind the Volvo and immediately activated its emergency lights behind the vehicle in an attempt to warn oncoming traffic. A tractor trailer traveling behind the ambulance attempted to stop but was unable and struck the side of the ambulance. The tractor continued on and struck the Volvo and a white construction van before coming to a stop. The impact with the construction van caused it to be pushed into a fifth vehicle.

The driver of the van complained of pain in his shoulder, knee and elbow. The driver was transported to the Western Maryland Health System and was treated and released. The driver of the tractor trailer, Jose Rodriguez, of Norfolk, VA was cited in the accident.

Three vehicles had to be towed from the scene due to damages.
