ACLU Legislative Effort Would Limit Local Police Involvement In Immigration Enforcement

It’s a bill that could potentially tie the hands of Allegany County Sheriff’s deputies and Cumberland City Police officers in trying to deal with the growing problem of illegal immigrants in the state.  The American Civil Liberties Union announced a legislative effort this week to limit local police involvement in immigration enforcement. The group called the practice “wasteful and counterproductive”. State Senator Victor Ramirez, a Prince Georges County Democrat, is leading the push to enact the Maryland Trust Act. The bill would limit police powers to hold people on immigration detainers issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Brad Botwin, director of the pro-enforcement group Help Save Maryland, said the detainers extend the government's ability to find and deport the people in question, regardless of what other offenses they may have committed. He says the bottom line is that illegal immigrants should not be in the state…
