August 27th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Allegany College of Maryland's award-wining literary magazine, Expressions, has released its thirtieth anniversary edition.

Expressions 2019 features 53 examples of original student work in prose, poetry and art by 36 students in its 81 pages. While the majority of Expressions’ contributors majored in the arts, humanities and multimedia technology, the magazine’s submission process is open to the entire student body. Works include essays, short stories, poems, paintings, prints, drawings and photographs.

Student editor David Whitaker provided the introduction to Expressions. Ronald Jenkins and Tino Wilfong served as faculty co-editors. Heather Greise was the assistant editor for poetry. An editorial board comprised of 13 faculty and staff members from the college assisted with selection. ACM Senior Graphic Designer Alicia Phillips designed the publication’s layout.

Copies of Expressions are available locally and at the Cumberland campus. A pdf is available for view online at allegany.edu/expressions.

Expressions has been submitted to the Community College Humanities Association (CCHA) to be judged as part of its national literary magazine competition. The publication placed second in its division in 2017 and third in 2016.

CCHA is the only national organization of its kind dedicated to preserving and strengthening the humanities at two-year colleges. It invites entries from community colleges within its five geographical areas for its annual literary magazine competition. ACM competes in CCHA’s Eastern Division, which extends from Maryland and the District of Columbia north to Maine and includes Puerto Rico.
