Affordable Care Act Enrollment Begins Today

With enrollment beginning today,  there are still many people with no real firm understanding of what the Affordable Care Act, also referred to as Obamacare, will mean to them . Locally a public informational session was held last week in the auditorium at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.  Approved and voted into law three years ago, the Affordable Care Act essentially is a program that requires all uninsured Americans to obtain health insurance The bottom line is that as of October 1st,  if you already have insurance through an employer or any other organization, you do not have to register or do anything; however if  you have no  health insurance you need to  register and obtain coverage.  Those who do not register and obtain health insurance will be subject to a penalty assessed on their tax return of a minimum of $95 or 1 percent of their adjusted gross income. In a recent WCBC “man on the street” survey in Cumberland asking  whether the new program will be good for most American’s-  the most common responses were either a resounding “NO” or a lack of knowledge or understanding of what it will mean to individuals and their families…
