AHEC West Student Career ECHO Program Taking Applications

April 25th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades at schools in Washington, Allegany, and Garrett counties are encouraged to apply to participate in AHEC West’s Exploring Careers in Health Occupations (ECHO)  program, which allows high school students to sample careers in health occupations in a week-long summer residential program.

Over the course of the highly interactive and fun week, students travel to the University of Maryland, Baltimore, home to the state’s graduate programs in nursing, pharmacy, and a host of other health occupations, including the state’s medical school. They visit the teaching hospital’s cadaver lab and shock trauma unit. In addition, students will also learn about and tour the numerous aspects of health care in the Western Maryland region, such as the Western Maryland Health System, the Garrett Regional Medical Center, State Police Trooper 5, local health departments, and private practitioners.

The ECHO program engages students in a series of team building exercises that include white water rafting and zip-lining.

Students are housed on campus at either Frostburg State University or Garrett College, getting a taste of life on a college campus. Strict chaperoning is provided throughout the week’s activities.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday, May 3rd. Applications may be found at www.ahecwest.org. Anyone with questions should call Melissa Clark, Program Coordinator, at 301-777-9150, ext. 115, or email her at mclark@ahecwest.org.
