Allegany Co. Public Schools Fine Tuning Policy To Keep Predators Away From Children

Allegany County Public School officials are continuing to fine tune a policy making efforts to “broaden the net” to keep sexual predators away from children. A current policy already prohibits convicted sex offenders from entering any public school or attending any school-sponsored event or activity. An amended policy being considered by the Board of Education would apply the same rule to individuals accused of sexual crimes but whose court proceedings are pending. Exceptions can be made for convicted or suspected sex offenders who have a child in a school and want to attend a particular school event. Those individuals must receive  written permission from the principal prior to the event, the policy states. Although a first reading was approved in December and it was expected to be formally adopted this month, some questions from board members and a desire to make the policy as strict and as clear as possible- has delayed a final vote.
