Allegany County residents are encouraged to take advantage of an exceptional upcoming opportunity to safely and legally dispose of numerous household hazardous waste free of charge. For the first time, paint can be recycled at the Allegany County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Allegany County is the first county in the state to offer this option. There will be a nominal fee to recycle paint.
The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be on Saturday, September 9, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., rain or shine, at the Allegany County Fairgrounds, 11490 Moss Avenue, Cumberland. Proof of Allegany County residency will be required such as a current driver’s license or utility bill.
ACCEPTED ITEMS – FREE OF CHARGE
Household chemicals used in cleaning, pesticides, herbicides, hormone-enhanced products, leftover adhesives, tar, driveway repair asphalt, caulking, stains, solvents, aerosol cans, propane, residential smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, hand-held road flares, pool chemicals, batteries, mercury, asbestos, PCB and non-PCB light ballasts, fluorescent tubes, oil, antifreeze, gasoline, etc.
PAINT – $2.00 PER CONTAINER
Latex, water-based, enamel, acrylic, and oil-based paints in original container for contents to be recycled. Cash, check, and credit card accepted.
DO NOT BRING
Ammunition, explosives, radioactive materials, prescription medicines, medical or infectious waste, or poisonous gas compounds.
Business waste and household trash will not be accepted.
This event is not for hazardous waste from businesses, institutions, and commercial/industrial operations. For additional information these entities should contact Allegany County Recycling Coordinator Siera N. This special collection event is offered by Advanced Disposal, the Allegany County Commissioners, Jacob C. Shade, Creade V. Brodie, Jr., and William R. Valentine, the Allegany County Solid Waste Management Board, Burgmeier’s Hauling, the City of Cumberland, the City of Frostburg, the Town of Lonaconing, NEFCO, the Town of Westernport, and Yuck Old Paint.

Mountainview Landfill does not accept liquid paint (i.e., liquid waste). However, after the paint is dry, all types of paint may be deposited in the landfill. This includes the paint itself as well as paint cans, brushed, rollers, and applicator trays.
To dry a can of paint, take the lid off of the can and let the paint dry naturally to a solid consistency. To quicken the drying process, pour the paint over kitty litter or shredded newspaper into a box lined with plastic bags.
