Kids in Allegany County return to school on August 24th. Had a post Labor Day bill passed the Maryland General Assembly this year, that return date would not be until be September 8th. Despite failing to even get a committee hearing in either the Senate or the House this year, the bid for a state-mandated post-Labor Day start to the school year will continue. The proposal had the backing of Comptroller Peter Franchot and Governor Larry Hogan as well as a petition signed by 13,000 Marylanders- however the bill never got any traction during the session and failed to come before a committee vote in either chamber. Franchot expects the bill to be reintroduced next year, calling it a “no brainer” and a win-win for the state…
