Allegany County Loses Educator

April 4th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County has lost one of its leading educators in the field of theater.  JoAnn Stangel died last week at the age of 80 after decades of teaching and directing plays in Cumberland and Pittsburgh.  Ms. Stangel began the Allegany Arrowettes in the mid 1960s and directed plays for years before moving to Pittsburgh.  She returned to Cumberland in 1990 and began teaching English at Bishop Walsh, where she also directed plays for two decades.  Mary Jane O’Rourke, the English Department Chair at Fort Hill, has known Ms. Stangel for decades and her daughter Colleen performed in plays at Bishop Walsh for years.
