March 12th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

In response to the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and at the direction of the State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Karen Salmon, this year’s Teacher of the Year banquet scheduled for Monday, March 16, 2020, at the Allegany County Museum has been cancelled.

This year, ACPS honored nine Teachers of the Year representatives for their dedication and commitment to student success. These finalists were as follows: Stacey Bradley, South Penn Elementary School; Karissa Brandenburg, Braddock Middle School; Tiffanie Hardnam, Cash Valley Elementary School; Meredith Irons, Cresaptown Elementary School; Megan Mathews, George’s Creek Elementary School; Lisa Paz, John Humbird Elementary School; Florence Saku, Allegany High School; Daphne Snyder, Bel Air Elementary School; and Joy Wilt, Parkside Elementary School.

Each year a selection committee is formed to choose the winner of this prestigious award. This year’s selection committee was comprised of Mrs. Sarah Llewellyn, 2019-2020 Allegany County Teacher of the Year; Mrs. Breann D’Atri, Coordinator of Apprenticeship Maryland Program/Realtor; and Mrs. Jennifer Howell, HR Manager at Cintas.

The winner of the annual Teacher of the Year award is typically announced during the banquet; however, this year’s winner will be notified first, and then the school system will issue a press release to highlight their award.
