Allegany High School Opens Camper’s Cubby Student Pantry

March 11th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Several students in Tammy Twigg’s Advanced Placement Government class at Allegany High School recently implemented a service-learning project that has since morphed into the school’s new student pantry. The Camper’s Cubby will be used to provide various basic necessities, including clothes, food, school supplies and personal hygiene products, for Allegany students.

"School is a supposed to be a safe place for our students,” said Mrs. Twigg. “We need to meet their basic needs if we want them to be successful.” AP student, Jocelyn Weston echoed those sentiments, “It’s been a lot of fun being able to give something back to our school community.”

Teachers, school counselors, and even other students can refer others in need to the Camper’s Cubby.  Since it’s implementation just over a month ago, eight Allegany students have benefitted from supplies in the pantry.

The Camper Cubby has developed its inventory of supplies through donations from staff and students as well as local businesses including Dr. Wolf’s dentist office and the Western Maryland Health System. Plans are underway for the Western Maryland Food Bank to provide food supplies to increase the pantry’s stock.

Monetary donations can also be accepted through a GoFundMe page maintained by Twigg.  Visit https://www.gofundme.com/uct93zks to learn more about the Camper’s Cubby or to make a donation.
