Animal Shelter Encourages Owners to Prepare for Cold Weather

November 12th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Cumberland – With the cold weather upon us and temperatures expected to be significantly lower in the coming the weeks, the Allegany County Animal Shelter would like to remind owners of their responsibility to outside pets. Ideally, dogs should be taken outside frequently for bathroom breaks and exercise, but kept inside the rest of the time if possible. However, any dog that is being housed outside should have access to a shelter that is sufficient in size (but not too big or it will not hold body heat) and has appropriate bedding. Clean dry straw is the best option for bedding, as blankets will become damp and hold moisture. If you are caring for outside cats, remember, they need protection from the elements, as well. A quick and easy solution is to create a shelter with a plastic tub lined with Styrofoam and filled with clean dry straw. It is also important that outdoor pets have access to fresh food and water. Check water bowls often to make sure the water is not frozen and consider plastic bowls vs. metal as pets’ tongues may freeze to the metal. And remember, pets that spend a lot of time outdoors in the colder months need more food, as keeping warm depletes energy. If you see an animal in distress and/or suffering from exposure to the elements, please contact Animal Control immediately. Office hours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. For emergencies outside those hours, please call 911 and request an animal control officer. Please be observant and vigilant, but please also remember that some pets must be tethered out for short periods for bathroom breaks. However, if a dog is tied out for a longer period of time in inclement weather, please contact Animal Control for assistance. Please direct questions to Animal Control at 240-362-7518 or the Shelter at 301-777-5930.
