Another Water Main Break on Bedford Street

August 9th, 2011 by WCBC Radio

The City of Cumberland Public Works Department reports that a major water main break has occurred at the intersection of Independence and Bedford Streets, causing significant damage to Bedford Street and forcing the closure of Bedford Street below Linden Street.  Motorists are able to access Bedford Street up to Linden Street, but are encouraged to avoid the area if at all possible.

Water service to a significant portion of North End will be interrupted and higher elevations throughout the city may experience decreased water pressure as additional water is lost from the tanks.  The City requests all residents to limit their water usage at this time to help maintain water levels in the containment tanks.  City crews are currently on the scene and are expected to remain there throughout the night to bring service back on line.

Extensive damage has occurred to the portion of Bedford Street between Independence Street and Henderson Avenue and both south-bound lanes of the McMullen Bridge are expected to remain closed for the next several days.   The City will be working to finalize enough repairs in the area of the original break on the McMullen Bridge approach ramp to allow the bridge to be open to assist with traffic flow.
