On 9/9/2012 at approximately 0945 hours Sr/Tpr. E. Derham responded to small aircraft crash in the Black Oak Bottom area off of Route 220 near Rawlings, MD. The aircraft attempted to take off from a private air strip. The aircraft was an antique 1927 Pitcairn Fleetwing Bi Plane. The aircraft was Black and Yellow in color. The pilot and sole occupant in the aircraft was the owner Robert Keith Armstrong from Rawlings, MD. The pilot advised that during take off, the aircraft climbed to approximately 100 feet and reported to have engine problems. The pilot/Armstrong was transported to the hospital by private vehicle with minor injuries to WMHS. The McCoole Volunteer Fire Dept responded to the crash site for a small fuel spill. The FAA and NTSB were notified of the incident. Further investigation will be completed by the FAA.
