Arrests Made in Breaking and Entering Case

On 11/21/2013 the Maryland State Police responded to a private residence on Vale Summit Road for a reported breaking and entering. When Troopers arrived they discovered that the suspect (s) had entered the residence by breaking the glass on a French door. Once inside, the suspect(s) removed numerous items, including a large amount of jewelry, laptop computers, electronic items, firearms, and ammunition. The total monetary loss to the victims in property stolen and in damage to the residence was approximately $20,000.00.

A request was made for the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) to assist in further investigation.

On 12/15/2013 30 year old Harold Michael Nicol, Jr., of Frostburg, was arrested on unrelated charges by the Frostburg Police. At that time he was found in possession of one of the reported stolen firearms. Based on this information, C3I Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Nicol, charging him with 1st Degree Burglary, 3rd Degree Burglary, 4th Degree Burglary, Theft, and related charges in connection with the break-in. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance and is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on total bonds of $71,000.00 pending his next court appearance.

C3I Investigators continued the investigation and developed a second suspect. Over the next several weeks Investigators were able to gather enough information to allow them to obtain a search and seizure warrant. On 01/29/2014 Investigators served the search warrant at a private residence on Pompey Smash Road in Vale Summit and recovered a large amount of the stolen jewelry, laptop computers, and electronics.

As a result, Investigators arrested 32 year old Derrick James Swick, of Frostburg, and charged him with 1st Degree Burglary, 3rd Degree Burglary, 4th Degree Burglary, and Theft. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance and is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on $200,000.00 bond pending his next court appearance.

The investigation is continuing by the Maryland State Police and C3I.
