On Tuesday, August 2, 2011, Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) arrested two juveniles in conjunction with the break in which occurred at South Penn Elementary School during the early morning hours on Saturday, July 30, 2011.
The Cumberland Police first responded to the school shortly after 1:00 AM on Saturday morning after being contacted by a neighbor who noticed suspicious activity at the school, which is currently undergoing some renovation work. Upon arrival, Officers discovered that the suspects had gained entry to the school in the area of the renovation work. A search of the school determined that the suspects had already fled the scene by the time Officers arrived.
With the aid of the Allegany County Board of Education, surveillance video of the school was reviewed and two suspects were observed running though the school, entering different areas of the building, and later, removing items. An inventory was completed by school staff and it was determined that approximately $8000.00 worth of electronic equipment, and other items, had been stolen.
The two suspects were identified from the video surveillance by CPD Officers who were familiar with them. C3I Investigators were able to obtain search warrants for two separate residences on Grand Avenue in Cumberland. With the assistance of the Cumberland Police, the warrants were served late Saturday afternoon, and a large majority of the items reported stolen were recovered.
As a result, a 14 year old juvenile and a 13 year old juvenile, both from Cumberland, were arrested and are being charged as Delinquents with Breaking & Entering, Theft, and related charges. They have been turned over to the Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice pending further legal action.
