Attorney General Frosh Announces Settlement with Western Union

January 31st, 2017 by WCBC Radio

Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today announced a settlement with Colorado-based The Western Union Company, resolving a multistate investigation which focused on complaints of consumers who used Western Union’s wire transfer service to send money to third parties involved in schemes to defraud consumers.  In addition to the Attorney General Frosh, the Attorneys General of 48 other states and the District of Columbia participated in the settlement.

“Consumers should always be wary when a stranger contacts them in an attempt to wire money,” said Attorney General Frosh.  “As a result of settlement, Western Union has agreed to strengthen its fraud prevention and detection programs, but the most effective way to defeat these fraudsters is to refuse to fall for the deception.”
