Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is asking Gov. Larry Hogan for more than $30 million to help reform the Baltimore Police Department as the city expects will be required under a pending consent decree with the Justice Department.
The Baltimore Sun reports (http://bsun.md/2dKkBJm ) that Amelia Chasse, a spokeswoman for the Republican governor, said in a statement Tuesday that the governor's office had received a letter from the mayor "and will review it, as all budget requests are reviewed."
The Justice Department began investigating the police department after the death of Freddie Gray in 2015 from injuries he suffered in officers' custody, and the unrest that followed. The agency's report found police have for years violated the rights of residents, particularly in predominantly black neighborhoods.
