Ban On Assault Weapons Bill Drew The Most Debate During 2013 Session

The 2013 session of the Maryland General Assembly had no shortage of controversial and emotional issues- but none drew as much attention and debate than did Governor O’Malley’s proposed ban on assault weapons bill that ultimately was approved by lawmakers. Delegate Kevin Kelly, during Tuesday morning’s annual legislative wrap-up breakfast hosted by the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, said that while his office probably was contacted about 150 times each on the death penalty repeal and the gas tax hike- the total messages on gun control topped 27,000- with 99.9% of those opposed to the measure. All four members of the District One delegation opposed the bill. Kelly said all the legislation does is ban a weapon that is among the more popular used for hunting and sportsmen competitions- and a gun that the data says has never been routinely used in committing violent crimes…
