Ban On Fracking Takes Effect

Among the dozens of new laws that took effect in Maryland as of October 1st was a ban on hydraulic fracturing in the state. Governor Larry Hogan signed the bill in April- a week after the state’s Legislature passed the fracking ban. Maryland is now only the second state in the country to ban fracking, after New York established a similar ban in 2015. While fracking has little impact statewide- many believe it could have represented an economic revival for western Maryland- where Marcellus shale formations could have led to millions of dollars in new revenue for the economically distressed counties of Garrett and Allegany.
