The Office of the State’s Attorney for Allegany County, Michael Twigg, State’s Attorney, announced Wednesday, August 15, 2018, that Thomas Andrew Custer, Jr., 44 of Barton, was convicted in the Allegany County Circuit Court of First Degree Assault. The Honorable W. Timothy Finan sentenced Custer to 20 years in the Division of Corrections, with 8 years suspended, for the January 16th assault on his ex-girlfriend.
In the early morning hours of January 17, 2018, police responded to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center where they made contact with the victim. They learned that the night before, the victim met Custer in Lonaconing and drove the two to a location on Laurel Run Road at which time he became enraged and attacked her causing her to run the vehicle into a ditch. The victim then got out of the car to run for help but was knocked to the ground by Custer who proceeded to stab her with a pen knife and strangle her to the point of unconsciousness. As a result of the assault, the victim suffered facial injuries, bruising and puncture wounds. She was treated and released from the hospital.
Prosecuting the case for the State was Assistant State’s Attorney Karen Detrick. Custer was represented by James Elliott, Esquire.
