Two drivers were killed and a third driver and passenger were injured Thursday when a tractor-trailer traveled out of control on U.S. Route 30 near Schellsburg and struck two vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, according to Pennsylvania State Police. The Cumberland Times News reports the 8:07 a.m. crash claimed the lives of a 67-year-old Bedford man, who was operating a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, and a 50-year-old Cincinnati man, who was operating a 2013 Freightliner rig loaded with bottled vegetable oil, police said.

Identity of the victims was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash also injured a 52-year-old Bedford County man who was operating a Chevrolet Silverado truck and his 28-year-old male passenger. Both reportedly suffered minor injuries and were taken to Somerset Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Police said the tractor-trailer was being operated eastbound on Route 30 west of Ryan Mill Road when it traveled out of control, crossed the double yellow lines into the westbound lanes where it struck the Chevrolet pickup and the Jeep Cherokee.

Witnesses told police the rig was being operated at an excessive speed in the 45-mph zone where the crash occurred.

The investigation is continuing. Road crews are reportedly working in the area to remove debris and cargo and are expected to be on scene for a few days.

Numerous EMS units from Somerset County responded to the scene along with the Bedford County medical examiner, PennDOT personnel and utility and towing companies.
