The Maryland House of Delegates unanimously passed a bill that will change the hours of operation for establishments that holding liquor licenses to sell alcoholic beverages for on and off premises on Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight.
Delegate Wendell Beitzel, (R) District 1A received a favorable report on his legislation, House Bill (HB) 929 – Garrett County – Alcoholic Beverages – Licenses and Sunday Sales. Under current law, Garrett County Sunday Sales of alcohol are authorized for certain alcoholic beverages license holders to sell alcohol from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Since the bill passed third reading on the House floor, the bill must now go over to the Senate floor to be voted on. Rarely has there ever been a contentious debate over local alcoholic beverage legislation. It is most likely that this bill will pass the Senate Chamber. If this legislation is signed into law, it will not take effect immediately, but will be effective July 1, 2017.
Expansion of Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages could result in a significant increase in alcoholic sales and alcoholic beverage license sales, which means an increase in local and state revenues.
