Bel Air Elementary School Principal Autumn Eirich reacting to the official announcement Thursday that the school had been chosen as a National Blue Ribbon School. It’s the first time an Allegany County school has achieved the honor in the award’s almost 30-year history. According to the state’s education web site, Blue Ribbon Schools are recognized as some of America’s most successful schools, and the Maryland State Department of Education chooses six Blue Ribbon Schools each year based on academic performance and other factors. Each state’s Blue Ribbon Schools are then in the running for the U.S. Department of Education’s national award, which goes to public and private schools that are either high performing or have greatly improved student achievement, especially among disadvantaged students
