Bike Lane Falls 3-2 at Final Vote

After more than a year of debate, public hearings and studies- the Cumberland Mayor and City Council, by a 3-2 vote, rejected creating a bicycle lane on Frederick Street. Instead, calling it a compromise, the council approved adding “Share the Road” signs and painted arrows on the street designed to make for a more bike friendly travel area. The plan that has been on the table called for placing a 5- to 6-foot-wide bike lane on Frederick Street beside the parking lane on the right side of the road. Currently two lanes, Frederick Street would have been reduced to one lane wide enough to allow cars to pull to the left if making a left-hand turn under the plan. After brief discussion during Tuesday night’s council meeting, Councilwoman Nicole Alt-Myers proposed the compromise plan. When one biker in the audience suggested that the biking community was only willing to accept a bike lane, and was not interested in share the road signage, the council member disagreed…
