Bill That Would Phase Out Luke Mill Credits Dies In Committee

Some good news for the Luke paper mill and Allegany County coming out of Annapolis this week as a bill that would have phased out certain credits important to NewPage died in committee after legislators voted to give the bill an unfavorable recommendation. The bill was defeated 14-10 in the House Environmental Matters Committee. While the bill makes some provisions to protect the mill, the negative effects of the bill would have outweighed the benefits according to Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine. He said the bill would have changed a list of renewable energy sources and phased out the Luke paper plant’s eligibility for renewable energy credits- with a shift toward wind generation…
