October 24th, 2011 by WCBC Radio

Black bear season opens today (Monday) in western Maryland. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has issued 260 black bear hunting permits this year, with a harvest quota of 55 to 80 bears. Black bears are no stranger to the state, with healthy breeding populations in Garrett, Allegany, Washington and Frederick counties. In 2005, there were an estimated 326 adult and sub adult black bears in Allegany and Garrett counties. A new survey, including all four Western Maryland counties, was conducted this summer and is scheduled for release in 2012.
