Blighted Properties Still an Issue in Cumberland

October 10th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Although the Cumberland Mayor and City Council has made removing blighted properties a top priority in recent years- there are still plenty of eyesores left in town according to several citizens. One woman who addressed the city officials during this week’s council meeting, said that she routinely walks in her neighborhood and is appalled to see the large number of dilapidated and abandoned houses in South Cumberland.  City Administrator Jeff Rhodes said that the city has a specific committee in place to focus on the problem of blighted properties- but the bottom line is that it remains a major challenge for a number of reasons- most notably absentee landlords.
