Board Enters into Agreement Looking for Permanent Superintendent

February 12th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Board of Education Tuesday formally entered into an agreement with the Maryland Association of Boards of Education for assistance  in the search for a permanent superintendent. The board named Jeff Blank as the interim superintendent last summer- and in October (by a 3-2 vote) named him as the permanent choice. The state, however, overruled that action saying it was done outside of the statutory appointment period. Now faced with a July 1 deadline to appoint a permanent superintendent, the board will utilize the services of MABE to assist in the four step process which includes advertising; conducting the search; making a selection and appointing a person to fill the position. Cost to the board will be $20,000 plus expenses. The expenses part of the arrangement presented a concern for board member Robert Farrell who said he was hesitant to sign off on the deal without having a better handle on how much those expenses could cost the board. Board President Tammy Fraley noted that there will be a point person with MABE and the board in communication throughout the process that will keep tabs on any costs being incurred. Board member Ed Root said it’s difficult to project in advance what the final bill for expenses will look like- but the board can certainly be kept up to date during the process…

Why spend 20K plus expenses ? I’ll do the job for just expenses. Guess what? I can run the total well above 20K in no time.
Mr. Farrell is justified in his concern.
