Board Of Education Opposes House Bills

March 15th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. David Cox, gave school board members a brief legislative update during the March business meeting of the Board of Education.  He spent much of his report focused on two House Bills, 335 and 1447, which deal with public secondary schools near the boundary of two counties and school attendance in another county respectively.  The Board of Education opposes both bills and feels that they erode local authority to administer the Allegany County Public School System.   Cox said those two bills,  have required a great deal of time and energy to  oppose and that the board firmly believes that these are decisions vested with the elected Board of Education, which is given legal authority by state statute and should not be a matter for the state legislature.  He said there has been a strong and varied show of support in opposing the proposed legislation…
