Board of Education Ruling on Ex-Officio Member Tonight

After more than a month of debate, the Allegany County Board of Education will take action at tonights public meeting on the question of the role of the non-voting ex-officio member. The dispute between the school board and the county commissioners centers on whether or not the commissioners who sits as the ex-officio member is permitted to attend closed or executive sessions of the board. Those sessions are generally reserved for discussions of contract negotiations, litigation as well as student and personnel issues. Commissioner Bill Valentine who currently holds the position wants to attend those sessions, while some board members aren’t comfortable with it. The county has threatened to take the board to court over the issue. During tonights business meeting, the board will vote on the policy for board meetings- with will cover the ex-officio position. Board member Mike Llewellyn, who is one of those who has reservations about allowing the  commissioner in those sessions, said he hopes  the matter is resolved once and for all…
