Board of Education Seeking 6% Funding Increase

March 7th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Board of Education will be seeking a 6.1% increase in funding from the County Commissioners this year- which equates to about $1.5 million above last year’s allocation. The request for additional dollars comes after another year of declining student enrollment numbers. Funding formulas used by the state and county are tied to student population based on per pupil expenditures. With Allegany County’s student numbers continuing to drop- Commissioner Creade Brodie Jr said he is somewhat perplexed by the board of education’s situation- as board officials have been saying for several years that the data shows projected student increases. Brodie says that clearly is not the case…

Mr.Brodie needn’t be perplexed. The projected student increase data was rolled out when the board “needed” that new high school. That’s now a done deal so the increase is now a decline. Now the board needs more funds to educate fewer students.
I’m surprised that the commissioners haven’t proposed an outside consultant be hired to do a study of the situation. Then maybe they will understand what a lot of us already know to be true in talking to family and friends, many times talking long distance.

The previous BoE not only fabricated projections of increases in the number of students, they repeatedly failed to produce a timely audit of their massive expenditures as required by law. To draw attention away from this fiscal misbehavior , they spread titillating tales of boardroom footise.

Simple solution, just say no and move on….. the chillll-dren can be continued to be churned out as uneducated drones believing in the New Green Deal pretty much the same with or without the extra money.

Unrelated but still the same, I guess I need to plan on adding my share of the $1.5 million increases to my tax increase for the higher garbage collection fees just announced

Tongue and cheek….how much of the $1.5 million is increased legal fees for the BOE and their circus? Can the existing BOE sue the old members for their role in creating the mess?

      > You do understand that the BOE is not the agency that generates the fees for city trach / recycling? Maybe if schools had been funded better back in your day it would be clearer to you. I hope the buck and a half or so a month doesn’t disrupt you too much.

        > Geee, I had no clue the BOE has no connection the city trash rates. Yes, I object to the buck and half a month fee increase. We have been buck and halfed to death. Yes, I learned to read, write, and cipher just fine through my “under funded” public school education. More money is NOT always the answer. Point is they ALL want more blood from this turnip and yet I continue to see things going backward not forward.

          > We have been much more than bucknahalf’d to death. The trash fee is peanuts compared to the roughly 6 times increase of the Sewer charges and a slightly lesser increase to the Water rates during Grim times. I have a 2007 bill for 94 days for $31 for water and $44 for sewer. A recent bill for 33 days is $33 for water and $81 for sewer. They claimed the change from quarterly to monthly billing was not to increase rates but, of course, they lied. They just figured folks would be upset by $350 WST bills and take $120 a month without getting out the pitchforks.

This is where we remind taxpayers that the three amigos were going to save taxpayers money. It does not seem to be working out. Hire more lawyers to find out why.
