Board of Education to Meet Today on Personnel Issue

May 31st, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Board of Education will hold their annual retreat, which is not open to the public, on Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Board of Education's Central Office, 108 Washington Street.  Immediately following the conclusion of the retreat, the Board will meet in an Open Session at 2:30 p.m.  At that time, it is anticipated that the Board will consider closure of the public meeting to meet in Executive Session in order to deliberate on a personnel matter and consult with legal counsel. While the closed session agenda is not announced, two recent executive sessions have focused on the pending departure of Superintendent David Cox who has accepted a similar position in his native Tennessee. Although he was interviewed and selected-  and Cox talked about his excitement to be returning home- the move isn’t yet official as no contract has been finalized with the Sullivan County School Board, nor has an exit plan from his Allegany County position been agreed upon. Technically the board could require a 60 day notice- however that is not anticipated. The local board has been tight lipped about the entire situation, with none of the members commenting publicly on the probability of losing Cox- or the process or time frame. The only official statement coming from the board since the news broke was issued via email to the media late on the evening of May 8th simply acknowledging that Cox had been offered the position in Tennesse- and that additional information would be released to the public when deemed appropriate. Board President Robert Farrell has told WCBC News that the board  agreed that any statements or comments on the situation will come from the collective board-and not from members speaking individually…
