Board to Receive Final Estimates on New Allegany Next Week

February 18th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Next week the Allegany County Board of Education will learn the approximate cost of constructing a new Allegany High School on Haystack Mountain. Final estimates from contractors are due Wednesday. Vince Montana, director of facilities for the school system, gave an update on the new Allegany High project at the regular monthly meeting of the school board  announcing that the bids will be received at 1 p.m. on February 24th.  The (required) minority business documents are due by 1:30 p.m., at which time the bids will be opened. The five contractors who entered bids when the school construction project was first bid in September were invited to resubmit bids on Jan. 26. When the initial contractor estimates were opened on September 2, the cost of the school came in at roughly $60 million- more than $20 million above estimates from the architect.  School Superintendent Dr David Cox tells WCBC News that he is  hopeful that some reductions in the design and scope of the new school will yield a price tag more within the board's budget…
