Boards Of Education Agree On List Of Issues To Present At Meeting

The Allegany and Garrett County Board’s of Education have agreed on a priority list of nine issues, ranging from funding requests to reduced regulation, to be presented at a meeting this morning to the District One Legislative Delegation. The hope is that the local lawmakers will consider introducing the requests during the upcoming session of the Maryland General Assembly. Each year, school systems and other organizations that seek state funds, prepare a list of regulations and laws that they wish to see clarified or amended.  One of those requests has a brief history from earlier this year. At issue is the ability of a county commissioner, serving in the capacity of an ex officio member of the board, to sit in on executive or closed sessions. Those sessions usually focus on student appeals; contract negotiations; and other sensitive personnel issues. Allegany County School Board President Ed Root says he isn’t comfortable with the commissioners participating in the executive sessions.…
