On Monday morning, 08/12/2013, at 8:20 AM, the Cumberland Police responded to a report of a deceased person on the Allegheny Highlands Trail in the vicinity of the Valley Street crossing. A witness was walking the trail when they noticed the subject and responded to a local business to report the finding to 911.

When Officers arrived they discovered the body of a 51 year old male Cumberland resident, whose name is being withheld. Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to assist in the investigation. The scene was processed by an Evidence Collection Technician with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division. The Allegany County Department of Homeland Security provided additional assistance by blocking off both ends of the trail while the investigation was conducted.

Investigation revealed that the victim had apparently taken his own life by hanging himself from a nearby railing. There was no other sign of trauma to the body. The body is being sent to the Maryland State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. No foul play is suspected.

The investigation is continuing by the Cumberland Police and C3I.
