BOE Approves 1% Cost Of Living Increase

The Allegany County Board of Education’s budget approved this week included a  1 percent cost of living increase for fiscal year 2016 for teachers and others staff.  Given the tight fiscal times the board is facing, several callers to WCBC have questioned the timing of the pay hike- especially as it comes at the same time that 16 positions are being eliminated. Superintendent David Cox said the cost of living adjustment was needed, since teachers hadn’t seen an increase in four years, and even longer for other school staff. Cox said the cost of living adjustment was considered a high priority in the budgeting process. It will cost about $700,000.  Board members were supportive of the increase. Board President Nick Hadley noted that four years ago the Teachers Association, to help out during a budget crunch, agreed to reduce a previously agreed upon 2% increase to just 1%…
