BOE Asked To Consider New Policy On Gifts

The Allegany County Board of Education has been asked to consider adopting a new policy designed to address the issue of public gifts/donations made to the school system. Chief Business Officer Randy Bittinger provided a brief overview of the proposed policy during Tuesday night’s business meeting. Although there was no mention made, sources confirmed the WCBC News that the policy is being developed as a result of a recent controversy over two portraits of George Washington that were given to the school system earlier this year. The paintings, which were donated in February by the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization, were returned to the group’s president last month, after a dispute over whether it is proper to display the organization’s logo, which includes a Christian cross. The proposal calls for a set of regulations outlining criteria for acceptance of any donation.
