BOE Concerned About Funding And Likely State Cuts

The primary concern expressed by members of the Allegany County Board of Education to the local legislative delegation during a recent meeting centered on funding- and most likely additional state cuts. Both Allegany and Garrett county school boards suffered from drastic state funding cuts last year and further reductions are anticipated in the year ahead. Last year, State Senator George Edwards introduced a bill to cap cuts at 6.5 percent of a board’s budget, saving both school systems hundreds of thousands of dollars. He said he would “dust off last year’s bill” this session, seeking a similar cap. As a result of that bill, Allegany’s initial $6.5 million shortfall ended up being about $5.4 million.
